Synopsis about the report:
Arizona is one of the fastest-growing states in the world’s most prosperous industrialized nation. However, there are vulnerable segments of Arizona's population living in conditions that rival communities receiving global aid. If that wasn’t clear before the COVID-19 pandemic, it is now...as we fully assess the disproportionate health, economic and social impact the novel coronavirus and the response to it have on communities of color.
The Health and Well- Being of Black Girls and Women in Arizona report is a first look at a minimally understood segment of our population. It explores available data on the health and well-being of Black women and girls in Arizona and across the nation; with particular attention on COVID-19, demographics, vital statistics, health care, and end of life.
To be clear, there is a dangerous paucity of specific data about Black women and girls in Arizona that is often is explained away as the size of the population being statistically insignificant. But the underrepresentation of Black women and girls in data, has important implications for policy making and program effectiveness. What is known about Black women and girls is that Arizona needs to know more so that it can do better to resolve the clear, unacceptable inequities and disparities based on race and gender. Doing better in service to Black women and girls should factor into the State's broader goals to achieve long-term prosperity for all Arizonans.
Understanding the complex world of Black women and girls in Arizona requires specific data and an authentic analysis of their lived experiences in our State. It also requires acknowledging the strength and fortitude of Black women throughout this nation’s history, where they have been active agents of change despite formidable obstacles. Their journey and their resilience is an inspiration.
