The Arizona Business Database

Find. Understand. Invest.

The Arizona Business Database is a statewide, community-driven research tool that reveals where Arizona businesses are thriving—and where strategic public and private investment can make the biggest difference. Developed through mutually-beneficial strategic partnerships with local organizations already doing impactful work in the community, the database combines business attributes, employment, demographic, and geospatial data into one easy-to-use map plus filtering interface so policymakers, funders, researchers, community organizations, and business owners can act with clarity and confidence.

The database began as The State of Black Arizona’s initiative to document and strengthen Black-owned businesses. As the need for accurate, neighborhood-level business data grew, the project expanded into a statewide, community-driven research tool designed to be inclusive to all Arizona businesses.

Why does it matter?

This locally driven database fills neighborhood-level gaps national surveys miss, exposing patterns and opportunities for targeted financing, programs, and policy. As more businesses and partners add verified information, the database becomes a sharper engine for equitable economic growth across Arizona.

Who uses it?

This locally driven database fills neighborhood-level gaps national surveys miss, exposing patterns and opportunities for targeted financing, programs, and policy. As more businesses and partners add verified information, the database becomes a sharper engine for equitable economic growth across Arizona.

  • Funders and banks/community development financial institutions: Find geographic clusters where businesses show the greatest potential, and direct financing, grants, and technical assistance to the places where investment will have the most impact.
  • Policymakers and economic development teams: Identify where policy, programs, and infrastructure investments will close gaps and spur growth.
  • Community organizations and chambers: Map member needs, measure program impact, and connect members to partners and resources.

Business Owners = Partners

Business owners opt in to contribute verified profiles — not as our primary customer, but as essential partners whose participation makes the research actionable and helps them be discovered by funders and partners.

What does it do?

  • Features an interactive map + powerful filters (industry, size, year founded, geography)
  • Generates custom reports and aggregated data snapshots
  • Built for ethical, opt-in participation and local stewardship
  • Provides free information; the database improves as you add verified profiles

What doesn’t it do?

  • Not a directory for business contact and locations — While businesses can choose to share contact details and be discoverable, the Database is not a public marketplace or address book; contact information is shared only with partners when a business explicitly opts in, and listings are not guaranteed to be complete or current.
  • Not a public data broker — We prioritize ethical, opt-in participation and local stewardship.
  • Not a substitute for due diligence — Use the database to find leads and inform strategy, not as the sole basis for funding or contracting decisions.
  • Not a complete database yet — Data is growing during the beta period.

A springboard for collaboration

More than a mapping tool, the database is a springboard for a centralized coalition of community organizations to exchange verified information about the people and businesses they serve. Through the database, we aim to pool resources, break down silos, and create stronger conduits between services, capital, and communities. There’s nothing like this database anywhere.

Partnerships and investment

The database creates direct pathways for public, private, and philanthropic partners to discover high-impact opportunities, form data-sharing partnerships, target investments, and design programs that reach the businesses and neighborhoods that need them most.

Q: What is the Arizona Business Database?

A: The Arizona Business Database is a statewide, community-driven research tool that combines business attributes, employment, demographic and geospatial data into an easy-to-use mapping and filtering platform. It helps reveal where businesses are thriving — and where strategic public and private investment can have the most impact.

Q: How did this project start?

A: The database began as a Black Philanthropy Initiative (BPI) response to our recommendations from the State of Black of Business Report in 2021 to document and strengthen Black-owned businesses. As demand for neighborhood-level business data grew, the project expanded into an inclusive, statewide resource developed with local partners.

Q: Who is the database for?

A: Priority audiences include policymakers, corporations, and community development financial institutions (CDFIs). It is also used by funders, researchers, community organizations, chambers, and — as partners — business owners who opt in to contribute verified profiles. This locally driven database fills neighborhood-level gaps national surveys miss, exposing patterns and opportunities for targeted financing, programs, and policy.

Q: What does the database do?

A:

  • Provides an interactive map with powerful filters (industry, size, year founded, geography).
  • Produces aggregated data snapshots and custom reports to inform strategy and investment.
  • Is built for ethical, opt-in participation and local stewardship.
  • Improves as more businesses and partner organizations add verified information.

Q: What doesn’t the database do?

A:

  • It is not a public address book or marketplace. Contact information is only shared with partners when a business explicitly opts in.
  • It is not a public data broker. Participation is ethical and opt-in.
  • It is not a substitute for due diligence. Use the database to inform strategy and surface leads, but verify independently before funding or contracting.
  • It is not complete yet — the dataset is growing during the beta period.

Q: Is the database free?

A: Access is free through January 15, 2026. We will announce subscription and pricing details for full access after the beta period.

Q: How do business owners get listed?

A: Business owners can add or claim a profile by completing the listing form on the site. Profiles are opt-in: you choose what information to share and whether to make contact details available to partners.

Q: What does “verified profile” mean?

A: A verified profile indicates the business owner or an authorized representative has confirmed the listing’s information. Verification helps improve data quality and trustworthiness for partners and researchers.

Q: Who can see the information I provide?

A: By default, information you share is private and anonymous. Individual business and contact details are only disclosed to partners when you explicitly opt in to share them. Aggregated and anonymized data snapshots are available to users and partners as described on the site.

Q: Where does the data come from?

A: Data comes from a mix of publicly available sources, partner contributions, and self-reported, opt-in business profiles. The database is designed to be community-driven. It gets stronger and more accurate as more verified profiles and partner data are added.

Q: Can I download reports or snapshots?

A: No, we don't have this functionality available to date for printing reports. You can view aggregated data snapshots, however you cannot print reports from it.

Q: Can partners subscribe for more access?

A: Applications are reviewed by a selection committee made up of several alumni from the program. Decisions are based on the criteria described in the institute materials and the merit of your application narrative.

Q: Is my business required to share contact details to be included?

A: No. Sharing contact details is optional. Businesses can add basic information and still contribute to the statewide picture without making individual contact information public.

Q: Is the database secure and ethically managed?

A: Yes. The database is built for ethical, opt-in participation and local stewardship. We prioritize privacy, responsible data use, and partner governance.

Q: The data looks incomplete in my area — why?

A: The database is in beta and growing. Neighborhood-level coverage improves as more businesses and partner organizations contribute verified profiles. We welcome partners and community groups who want to help expand coverage.

Q: What are your terms & conditions?

A: You can find them HERE.

Q: How can my organization partner with the database?

A: If your organization is interested in data-sharing, subscription access, or other partnership/sponsorship opportunities, please complete our contact form.
