African American Leadership Institute

Since taking leadership of the African American Leadership Institute in 2017, the State of Black Arizona has continued to shape AALI into a space where Black leaders grow, connect, and lead with and for their communities across Arizona.

Through the African American Leadership Institute (AALI), we cultivate a network of Black leaders equipped to influence systems and institutions from within. Our three-month training program (October–December) provides mentorship, training, and access to platforms that empower participants to shape policy, culture, and community outcomes. By building Black civic and institutional leadership capacity, we aim to dismantle the gatekeeping that has long excluded our communities from decision-making spaces. This work drives long-term systems change by ensuring those most impacted by injustice are leading the solutions.

Central to participants’ growth are the three R’s: Rest, Re-membering, and Resistance.

Rest

AALI offers a refuge from the emotional toll of navigating spaces where Black voices are marginalized. As one of the only leadership spaces in Phoenix created by, with, and for Black leaders, it fosters self-care and renewal. Sessions begin with dinner and connection, and close with group reflection.

Re-membering

In a world that fragments Black identities, we support participants in reclaiming their wholeness through authentic connection and mutual support. AALI participants co-create shared agreements rooted in:

  • Joy: Practicing joy in everyday moments.
  • Feedback: Offering and receiving reflection with kindness.
  • Togetherness: Emphasizing collective responsibility and collaboration.
  • Abundance: Rejecting scarcity by sharing knowledge and support.
  • Care: Creating trust through active listening and accountability.

Resistance

AALI is a platform for addressing community challenges through Black leadership and perspective. By centering Black experiences, participants are empowered to confront systemic injustice and reclaim agency. Sessions are led by Black experts and explore topics like Arizona’s Black history, philanthropy, policing, healthcare disparities, education equity, and more.

AALI represents a uniquely impactful leadership training – one that offers a transformative space where Black leaders heal, grow, and organize for lasting change. By centering rest, identity, and resistance, we are building a future led by those most equipped to reimagine and reshape our systems.

Theme:

Beyond the Zero-Sum – Advancing Black Leadership Through Collective Power

Our theme for AALI Programming 2025, Beyond the Zero-Sum: Advancing Black Leadership Through Collective Power, calls participants to challenge scarcity narratives and embrace the truth that our liberation is interconnected. Too often, systems and stories suggest that one group’s progress must come at another’s expense. This year, inspired by Heather McGhee’s The Sum of Us, AALI fellows will examine how zero-sum thinking has shaped policies, workplaces, and institutions, including within our own communities.

Through presentations, discussions, and exercises grounded in emotional intelligence, equity-centered leadership, and coalition-building, participants will reflect on what it means to build power through partnership, to reshape systems, and to step into leadership that honors our legacy while redefining the future. Together, we will explore how Black leadership is not only about personal advancement but about creating pathways for collective progress that lift us all.
