The State Of Black Arizona Presents:
The Arizona Black Business Database
Coming Soon
The Black Business Database is the first and only community-driven data resource and research tool focused on Arizona’s Black-owned business ecosystem.
Through a user-friendly GIS-based interface, the Black Business Database will allow users to access highly localized data on Black entrepreneurship in combination with other economic, demographic, and geospatial data, to study characteristics, trends and impacts related to Arizona Black-owned businesses.
The State of Black Arizona is thrilled to partner with Blax Friday—Arizona’s largest Black business directory—for data collection, business engagement and community support efforts.
The Need For Data
The nation has faced significant economic turmoil in recent years. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted long-standing economic and social inequities, particularly affecting the Black community.
At the same time, glaring information gaps on Black-owned enterprises became increasingly apparent. Recognizing this information gap, State of Black Arizona published its inaugural State of Black Business Report in Arizona in March of 2021, which underscored the urgent need for more comprehensive data on underserved businesses.
Over the last two years, State of Black Arizona and Blax Friday have laid the foundation for a new and innovative research tool that will ultimately become the Black Business Database.
A Valuable Research Tool
The Black Business Database is designed to be a research tool for policymakers, elected officials, economists, academics, investors, and community organizations. We hope this tool will:
- Amplify the collective voice of Arizona’s Black-owned business community
- Inform economic development strategy and public policy at the local and state level
- Identify public and private investment opportunities in underserved communities
Users will be able to view anonymized business data, filter the data by business and owner characteristics, display data geospatially, add various map overlays, and generate custom reports and maps.
The Black Business Database is designed to be nimble and responsive to top-of-mind issues among Arizonans, providing contextualized analysis that informs policy, advocacy, and investment. With this tool, we aim to ensure that Arizona’s Black business community is heard.
Get Involved
After two years of painstaking work, we are at an exciting milestone. Our partnerships are strong, our community is engaged, and our processes are in place. We are preparing for Phase II of database development and plan to engage new communities via a statewide PR campaign.
